The Big Splash
On a glorious Seattle day, we decided to trundle over to the Washington Park Arboretum for a stroll. It was easy to see why this was one of my grandmother's favorite spots. There weren't many people out that day, surprisingly, so it was like we had much of it to ourselves.
Phoebe was in dog heaven. About every few yards, she stopped and rolled around in the grass. She also got to meet a few other dog friends on the trail which is always a highlight for her. We were especially delighted to meet Denny Crane - a cousin of the Italian Greyhound family. My mom and I just finished all of the seasons of Boston Legal so we were giddy about the name. The owner shrugged and said he came with the name and has never seen the show. Boy is she missing out! The dog looked more like an Alan Shore to me but maybe I'm just being picky.
As we wound our way through the trail, we stumbled upon a pond with beautiful lily pads and a few water lilies blooming in between. We all went up to the water's edge to look closely at the flowers and even Phoebe was quite interested. She sniffed and sniffed and then seemed a little too curious. My mom and I jokingly said to Phoebe that she couldn't play in the water but before the sentence was fully out, she jumped with the expectation that the lily pad would hold her (maybe like a rock).
My mom pulled her out by the leash as quickly as she went in. We all stood there for a split second and then my mom and I burst into laughter and Phoebe seemed embarrassed, stunned and overwhelmed all rolled into one. Her mixed emotions released a stream of energy and she started running all over the place like she had lost her mind. Well...she kind of had. We could barely see her as her soaking wet body zoomed back and forth on the grass. I'm bummed I didn't capture the moment on camera. We couldn't stop talking about it for the rest of the day. Whatever that plunge did to her made her pass out for a solid four hours.
Before heading home we took a drive through Madison Park and got a few treats at Madison Park Bakery. I picked out a few things that looked yummy to me and then my mom went in to get some things to share while I held Phoebe and when she came out she said she had a surprise treat. She opened up the bag and inside was a white meringue cookie with an almost identical Phoebe face on the top. How crazy!!
We drove around to see one of my mom's old childhood houses and also saw the spot where she forgot to pick up my uncle from school on his first day of Kindergarten. I've heard the story many times but it was fun to finally see the school and flag pole that was described in the story.
